KUCHING: The Sarawak Museum Campus will serve as a research centre for local and international students aside from being a venue to display Sarawak’s artifacts.
Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the new museum campus, when completed, would also become a very important resource centre for the culture and history of Sarawak.
“As a research centre, interested international students can come over and stay in Sarawak for some time to do research into our history, culture and so on,” he said after receiving a courtesy call from Sarawak Arm Sport Association (Sasa) at his office here yesterday.
Abdul Karim said members of the Asia-Europe Museum Network (Asemus) would come over next year to specifically visit the Sarawak Museum Campus. The visit is part of programmes for the Asemus general conference to be held here.
“During my visit to Vienna last year, Asemus members were having their meeting, and it was decided that their next meeting would be held in Sarawak end of this year.
“During that time (general conference), we may bring them to visit our museum
campus, which they are very excited to see in what we are doing.
“People who look after museums are very passionate about them (museums). When they heard that Sarawak is building a very big museum, they were very excited and want to come over and have their conference here,” he said.
He said aside from Vienna, several officials from the Museum Department also visited museums in Amsterdam and the United Kingdom late last year.
Abdul Karim said when they were in Amsterdam, they managed to reclaim several artifacts that were previously brought to Holland from Borneo.
“(A total of) 402 artifacts have been sent here. I was the one who received them. We will have a specific announcement and introduction to all those artifacts that were brought back here,” he said.
On the new museum campus, Abdul Karim said the main building would be completed next year. It would be fully completed in 2020, with all the artifacts put in. -TheBorneoPost
“To fill the museum will take quite some time because it is a very big place – about 7,000 square metres,” he said.
He added that the RM300-million Sarawak Museum Campus would be the second biggest in South East Asia after National Gallery Singapore.
