Social problems among youth being looked into

November 16, 2011

THE government is taking several measures to curb social problems among youths.

They include police patrol at hotspots and tourist areas to increase security.

“Public security monitoring is also being strengthened with the installation of CCTVs in spots prone to crime, particularly snatch thefts.

“Integrated operations and raids are also being conducted by the police from time to time,” said Youth Development assistant minister Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah in his reply to Ranum Mina (Opar) at the DUN sitting yesterday.

He said the Social Development Ministry would be organising a youth event in December to alert them to the importance of combating crime through the joint efforts of all levels of society.

Other measures to curb social problems include organising programmes and events that positively impact participants and increase their knowledge and skills in various fields.

Replying to Ripin Lamat (Lambir) on the issue of youth problems, Abdul Karim said the problem had not reached chronic level but was still under control.

“According to statistics from the police, the percentage of youths below 18 involved in criminal activities dropped by five per cent for year 2010 from 2009.

“In 2009, a total of 616 arrests out of 2,822 arrests were youths, which accounted for 21 per cent of total arrest, while in 2010, it was 708 out of 4,224 (16 per cent),” he explained.

He said it was the responsibility of all to ensure the reduction of social problems among youths. -TheBorneoPost
