KUCHING: The 2012 State Budget will be a ‘healthy’ one in relation to the global economy and development in Sarawak.

Chief Minister Pehin Sri Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud said the 2012 State Budget would be considered a safe and healthy budget that had been realistically planned to stimulate economic activities in Sarawak to sustain economic growth.

According to Taib, apart from outlining the efforts to intensify the state economy next year, the 2012 State Budget has also taken into account the present ‘dull’ global economic scenario.

“Although we (state government) know that the world economic situation is not ‘healthy’, we believe we will be able to get through this with success.

This is because the economies of China and India have shown positive growth.

“And with our position being located in Southeast Asia, I think there will be no problem for us to ensure that Sarawak economic growth will be on track,” said Taib, who is also Minister of Finance, to the media after chairing a precouncil meeting at Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) headquarters here yesterday.

The Chief Minister i s scheduled to table the 2012 State Budget during the second meeting of the 17th State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting, which starts today till 23 November.

Meanwh i l e , two bills , Supplementary Supply Bills 2012 and Supply Bills 2012, will be presented at this DUN sitting, where five motions will be tabled and 224 out of 305 questions will be answered orally.

Under the 2011 State Budget, of the RM 4.974 billion s allocated by the state government, 73 per cent or RM 3.63 billion was for development and the balance for management expenditure.

In another development at the same event, the outgoing Chairman of the State Barisan Nasional Backbenchers Club (BNBBC) Haji Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said a new chairman would be announced today.

When met by the media yesterday, Karim disclosed that the official handing over of duty would be done during the DUN sitting today.

“I believe that the new chairman will be able to take over the responsibilities.Even though he is still new in the job, I am confident that he has the ability and qualities to hold this important position in the DUN.

“The most important thing is the new chairman has good academic and career background,” said Karim, who had been appointed as Assistant Minister of Youth Development during the last State Cabinet reshuffle.

“I am not able to reveal more...just wait for tomorrow. The only thing that I can say about him is that he is a vocal kind of person,” he said.
