I have commended the organising of the inaugural Pesta Suntong Bako 2024 which had involved six villages located in the Demak Laut area. The organising committee had invited me to grace the closing and prize presentation ceremony which was held at the Kampung Bako Passenger Terminal recently.
The event is interesting because it is possibly the first of its kind held locally with the support from several villages namely Kampung Bako Hilir, Kampung Bako Tengah, Kampung Bako Hulu, Kampung Bako Lot, Kampung Bako Hijrah, and Kampung Bako Mesra. Participants who took part in the squid jigging competition were aiming for the prizes awarded in the longest squid, and heaviest squid categories.
I have mentioned to the organisers that they need to work hard to ensure the success of the event because it needs to be evaluated first before it can be made as an annual event for Sarawak’s tourism calendar. This includes evaluating the reception at the organisational level as well as the enthusiasm from the local community and residents involved.
Any new tourism related event or festival typically needs to be held for about two to three years before it can be considered for inclusion in the state’s tourism calendar Nevertheless, our Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak (MTCP) will remain to be supportive of new activities or programmes that can enhance the local tourism industry and add economic value to our local communities.
