MIRI: Sarawakians should strive to seize every opportunity presented by the government, towards developing the people’s economy together.
In stating this, Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah points out that the Sarawak government is always committed to developing the people’s economy and now, all possible efforts towards developing world-class information and communications technology (ICT) infrastructure are being implemented actively.
“All these efforts are to ensure that our country is developing more quickly, according to the present situation. Therefore, we should support such efforts and grab any opportunity to compete towards a brighter future.
“This is also to ensure that none of us would be left behind – certainly, every one of us is entitled to enjoy all the infrastructures provided,” he said at the division-level Maulidur Rasul celebration here yesterday.
On this year’s theme ‘Menyantuni Umat Membawa Rahmat’ (Being Compassionate, Will Bring In Blessings), Abdul Karim said it meant to remind all communities to always respect one another, avoid any hostility and conflict, and also to remain united despite the differences in religion, race, ideology and political affiliation.
“In the context of Malaysia – and especially in Sarawak – our society comprises multi-racial, multi-religious and multi-cultural people. In today’s scenario, these differences should not prevent us from cultivating in ourselves the love for harmony and well-being.
“We have developed the country and the state very well, despite the diversity in race and religion.
“The success in this development is the result of the government’s policies and persistent efforts from the previous leadership to the present one, as well as the spirit of tolerance and cooperation among the people in our state,” he added.
Over 5,000 people from in and around the division converged on Miri Indoor Stadium yesterday, including those under 88 contingents taking part in the Maulidur Rasul procession – of which Sarawak Energy Bhd (SEB) was adjudged the best overall contingent.
Abdul Karim led the procession, which was divided into five categories – A (schools and skills-training institutions), B (government departments and agencies), C (suraus and mosques), D (private sector and financial institutions), and E (associations and clubs).
SEB was the winner of Category D. Other contingent winners were SK Temenggung Datuk Muip (Category A), Miri Customs Department (Category B), Masjid Darul Istiqamah Kampung Luak (Category C) and Public Works Department (JKR) Islamic Welfare Association (Category E).
Abdul Karim’s wife Datin Zuraini Abdul Jabbar, Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Lee Kim Shin, Piasau assemblyman Datuk Sebastian Ting, Miri Resident Sherrina Hussaini who was also the organising committee advisor, Miri District Officer Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusuf who was also the organising chairman, and Miri Mayor Adam Yii were also present. -TheBorneoPost
