“It is not just about gaming but it can become a career to generate income to the gamers especially the youth,” he said.

According to Afiq, there are now 1.8 million esports enthusiasts in Malaysia and 35 per cent of Esports players in the country are aged between 21 and 35.

“This event is also in line with Sarawak’s Digital Economy initiatives and Esports tournaments can attract tens of millions of online viewers thus creating the potential for digital businesses.

“We are also bringing another boom to the local tourism industry by housing international Esports tournaments or conference in the state.

“We would like to thank the Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Youth and Sports Assistant Minister Datuk Snowdan Lawan and Sarawak Sports Corporation CEO Dr Ong Kong Swee for being so sporting and supportive for this event.

“A heartfelt gratitude also goes to all strategic partners and sponsors,” added Afiq.
