Nothing special for Sarawak – Abdul Karim

KUCHING: Overall, nothing special is presented in the Budget 2019 by the PH government especially for Sarawak.

“A total of RM4.3billion in allocation for Swak in 2019 is equal to what the BN government had previously provided,” observed Sarawak Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

“We hope the new PH Government is more eager to develop the regions such as Sarawak that are still in need of upgrading their infrastructure,” he lamented.

“Tourism Tax earned by a state 50% will be returned to the state. This is also the same as the previous government,” Abdul Karim quipped.

Commenting on the workers welfare, Abdul Karim said the RM1,100 minimum wage is just an increase of RM50.

“If I am not mistaken, the present minimum wage is RM1,050. It is a small amount and so far from what PH earlier proposed at RM1,500,” he said.

“However, even though there is a minimum wage, many are just getting RM800 or even below that as there’s no monitoring or enforcement from the relevant agencies.

Employers give below minimum wage and use the excuse that the workers are still ‘on probation’ or working temporarily,” he added.

The minimum wage, he added, may impact the morale of young work force coming into the labour market. -TheBorneoPost
