Abdul Karim: S’wakians will reject non local-based parties

September 4, 2018

KUCHING: Sarawakians want only Sarawak-based parties and Sarawakian leaders to lead and manage Sarawak, says state Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

The Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) vice-president said he has trust and faith in Sarawakian voters to continue supporting the local coalition, Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) as they do not like to be pushed around and be given empty promises.

“The forthcoming state election will be the same…I have my trust and faith in Sarawakian voters who do not like to be pushed around and be given empty promises, especially on the return of state’s rights and (autonomy over) our oil and gas.

“We have had enough of leaders from Semenanjung showing their arrogance in Sarawak, telling the people that they could win over the state,” said Abdul Karim when asked to comment on the statement by Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) vice-president Rafizi Ramli that he would come up with a strategy to increase the party’s representation in the state assembly from the current three to 18, enabling it to form the state government.

Rafizi was in Kuching on his campaign for PKR deputy president at a hotel here, which was held in conjunction with the 20th anniversary of PKR’s ‘reformasi’ uprising.

Abdul Karim said the people of Sarawak have heard of PKR and Pakatan Harapan (PH) wishing to win as many seats they could and forming the state government many times but the people’s verdict seem to be always the same.

“They will reject PKR…what does he (Rafizi) think of Sarawakians? Lembu cucuk hidung kah? (follow blindly).

“When the time comes, Sarawakian voters will show that Sarawakians want only Sarawak-based parties and Sarawakian leaders to lead and manage Sarawak,” he said.

In his speech over the weekend, Rafizi had said PKR must win at least 18 seats in the next state election to help fulfil PKR’s aspirations to be the anchor party of the Sarawak government if PH were to win in the next state election.

In the last state election in 2016, there were 82 seats contested – 72 were won by the then Barisan Nasional (BN), seven by Democratic Action Party (DAP) and three by PKR.

At present, PKR has six MPs from Sarawak – Willie Mongin (Puncak Borneo), Jugah Muyang (Lubok Antu), Ali Biju (Saratok), Larry Sng (Julau), Dr Michael Teo (Miri) and Baru Bian (Selangau). -TheBorneoPost
