KUCHING: Any unethical practice in sports such as match fixing will not be tolerated.
Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, who said this, hoped the full force of the law will be meted against those found guilty of match fixing.
He said this today as he expressed disappointment over the two state football players were remanded for six days from today to facilitate probe into alleged match-fixing last Saturday.
“Everybody is innocent until proven guilty. We let the MACC (Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission) investigate first, but then we will not tolerate any unethical practice like this match fixing and all that.
“If actually they did it, I hope the full force of the law will be against them and they will be barred for life,” he told reporters when met at the Chinese New Year open house hosted by Sarawak United People’s Party today.
The football players and the ‘bookie’ were detained on Wednesday by the MACC between 7.15pm and 7.55pm.
The remand application was granted by Magistrate Portia Tham Ong Leng until Feb 21.
The case is being investigated under Section 16(a) of the MACC 2009 for soliciting, which carries an imprisonment term up to seven years or a fine of up to RM50,000 upon conviction.
The players will be placed in MACC custody during the remand order while the ‘bookie’ will be in police custody, for further investigation. -TheBorneoPost
