Belasungkawa Sultan Azlan : Selamat Bersemadi, Tuanku Adil Penegak Daulat

May 28, 2014

Tunship fitting and timely for Taib — PBB leaders

KUCHING: The conferment of Seri Maharaja Mangku Negara (SMN), which carries the title ‘Tun’, on Yang di-Pertua Negeri Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud is both fitting and timely, considering his unsurpassed contribution to the nation’s development.

Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) supreme council member Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the former chief minister deserves to be bestowed the nation’s highest accolade due to his vast contribution to the country’s progress, in particular Sarawak, for over 50 years.

Taib who is also former PBB president received the award from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong at Istana Negara yesterday.

“This award fits the contribution and sacrifices Pehin Sri (Taib) has rendered to Malaysia and Sarawak since the 60s.

“As a citizen of Malaysia living in Sarawak, we are very happy with this award which Pehin Sri deservingly received.

“His contribution to Malaysia is unsurpassed.

“He has served all five prime ministers in various ministerial capacities either at state or federal,” commented the Assistant Minister for Youth Development.

Teras led by leaders familiar to the BN task —Abdul Karim

SIBU: Parti Tenaga Rakyat Sarawak (Teras) is technically not led by leaders ‘alien’ to the state BN, said PBB supreme council member Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman.

He added that Teras leaders are leaders holding position in the state Cabinet and are state assemblyman and MPs who won their seats using the BN symbol, except for George Lagong.

He was commenting on the media report that Chief Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Adenan Satem had all but confirmed that he was willing to accept Parti Tenaga Rakyat Sarawak (Teras) into the state Barisan Nasional fold.

Teras’ elected representatives led by senior ministers Tan Sri William Mawan Ikom and Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh made a courtesy call to Adenan on Friday.

Adenan was reported to have welcomed Teras, their support and would make the necessary arrangement when the need arose.

“Now, Teras has also given a pledge of loyalty and support for BN, whether its state or federal BN. As far as the state BN is concerned, that is of utmost importance. Where does the loyalty lie? I see if it’s for BN, the status quo (thus) remains…,” said Abdul Karim.

“If they pledge loyalty to CM and BN, they are considered BN-friendly. I see Teras as just splinters of SUPP and SPDP. Many months have passed by for these parties with internal problems to be resolved but probably being unachievable, these leaders decided that enough is enough and sought for a divorce. These actions come from these leaders themselves and not from CM or PBB,” said Abdul Karim, who is Assistant Minister of Youth Development and Asajaya assemblyman.

Youth must not easily sway by online spin - Karim

May 19, 2014

KUCHING: Youths in the state are encouraged to have an open mind when they come across news on issues that may come across as sensitive.

Assistant Minister of Youth Development Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said that with social media playing a major role in today’s society, it was crucial not to veer to extremes in opinion.

Citing last year’s general election, he pointed out that news on small issues that were reported in newspapers or posted online via social media can be misconstrued and blown out of proportion.

“We are all interested in reading news online including those from blogs where the posts lean towards either the government or opposition parties.

“However, it is better for us to have our own stance and analyse what we have just read before jumping to conclusions,” he said at the launch of the state-level ‘Program Gemilang Siswa & Forum Jati Diri 1Malaysia Siri II’ at Tun Ahmad Zaidi Adruce Auditorium of Teacher Education Institute of Malaysia (IPG) in Batu Lintang campus yesterday.

Abdul Karim also acknowledged that there is an uphill challenge among the society these days with topics such as religion easily taken out of context and becoming an issue.

“If there is a big disparity and imbalance among the community, this can cause conflict and result in disintegration in our country.

DAP wants to be the lead party in PR Sarawak - Karim

SIBU: The pinching of members among Pakatan Rakyat (PR) parties does not surprise Asajaya assemblyman Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

Abdul Karim, who is Assistant Minister of Youth Development, noted that DAP had always looked down on its PR partners.

“It is for this reason that DAP is intensively recruiting Malays, Dayaks and other native races into their fold and organising programmes like ‘Impian Sarawak’ in Bumi areas, where their PR partners have been contesting all these years,” he told The Borneo Post yesterday.

He was asked if the alleged member-pinching among Pakatan parties was an indication that the opposition could not work together.

According to news report, cracks were appearing in the state PR after one of two elected representatives of Sarawak Workers Party (SWP), and a senior supreme council member of the party were allegedly approached by another PR component party to jump ship.

SWP president Larry Sng reportedly said the members had declined the offer.

Sng was further quoted as saying that this would damage to their working relationship and derail their road map to join the opposition coalition.

Five applications for late birth registration as of March

THE National Registration Department (JPN) received five applications for late registrations of birth as of March this year and three are still under consideration.

Assistant Minister of Social Development Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah informed the august House yesterday that there was a total of 11 late registrations of birth applications last year.

“Out of the eleven, four were rejected mainly due to conflict in information and evidence provided,” he said in responding to Johnical Rayong Ngipa’s (BN-Engkilili) question on the status of late birth registrations in his constituency and the compound charged.

On the late application of identity cards in 2013, Karim revealed that there were eight applications of which all were approved.

“Until March this year, JPN has received one late application only, which has been approved,” he said.

Elaborating on the compound charged for late applications, Karim said the compound amount was determined according to age category.

For children reaching the age of 12 who did not apply within 30 days until 13 years of age, Karim disclosed, will be compounded RM11 (RM10 for processing fee and RM1 compound amount).

Master plan for Kampung Datu

THE state government is in the process of formulating a comprehensive Kampung Datu master plan to transform the area into a modern, well-planned and vibrant housing and urban settlement.

“This master plan would also cover the silviculture area at 11th Mile in Sibu, which is also to cater for extended families,” said Assistant Minister of Housing Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah when replying to a question by Yap Hoi Liong (DAP-Dudong), who wanted to know the government’s plans to help fire victims rebuild their houses in Kampung Datu, Sibu.

“We will be engaging with various stakeholders in particular affected residents on the planning of the whole area before we finalise the master plan, which would also cover the burnt down area and take into consideration the interest and need of fire victims,” he added.

Apart from this initiative, Abdul Karim pointed out that the Ministry of Housing through the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) would develop 33 units of affordable houses at the Kampung Datu Baru site to cater for the housing needs of Kpg Datu residents.

Karim: Govt targets zero squatters in state by 2020

KUCHING: Land and Survey Department census shows there are 2,507 household heads in squatter areas on government land in Piasau, Pujut and Senadin constituencies.

Assistant Housing Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah told the august house yesterday in response to Pujut assemblyman Fong Pau Teck’s question on the status of squatters in Miri which totaled about 4,000.

“The record given was based on a comprehensive survey carried out on those squatting on government land only and excluding those on private land,” Karim pointed out.

On plans and measures taken to tackle squatter issues in the state, Karim said the government had implemented various schemes and initiatives in an effort to achieve zero squatter status by 2020.

“First, a management and settlement committee was set up under the state Housing Ministry and Land and Survey Department to address squatter issues and the committee meets twice a year,” he said.

Karim added that the government had also implemented the state squatter action plan approved in 2010 which was monitored by the committee.

“This plan comprised strategic courses covering aspects of local planning, enforcement and development of housing in order to address squatter issues in a comprehensive and integrated manner.

Be more sensitive in dealing with people, Mara told

SIBU: Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) has been urged to be more sensitive in its approach in dealing with people as Malaysia is a multi-racial country of different faiths.

Assistant Minister of Youth Development and Asajaya assemblyman Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said yesterday any improper and insensitive actions would not be facilitating the 1Malaysia agenda of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

“I am surprised that Mara interviewers were asking Islamic religious questions for scholarship interviewees without counter checking the background of those they were interviewing.

“Mara should be more sensitive in its approach and know that Malaysia is a multi-ethnic and multi-religious country,” he told The Borneo Post.

Abdul Karim was referring to a recent incident, where a straight As student, Nigel Unchat Jeremaiah, claimed that he had participated in an ‘open question-and-answer session’, which touched on Islamic religious subjects.

Nigel was further reported to have claimed that candidates were asked on Islamic matters such as their understanding and opinion on the Hudud law, ‘rukun Solat’ and ‘adat menziarah jenazah’ among others.

Abdul Karim said he was unsure whether those religious questions were standard and mandatory interview questions and if they were, he felt sorry for Mara.

GST rally to sow seeds of hatred against government – Abdul Karim

SIBU: The opposition and organisers of the protest against Goods and Services Tax (GST) are already pre-empting that prices of goods and cost of living are going up, even before its implementation.

Asajaya assemblyman Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah who observed this said he believed the rally was an attempt to sow seeds of hatred and distrust towards the government.

“The fact that 160 countries have already imposed GST without much hassle and outcry shows that GST is a good tax system,” Abdul Karim, who is Assistant Minister of Youth Development, told The Borneo Post yesterday.

He added that he could understand if this protest was held when the imposition of GST had clearly shown prices of goods were going up, causing a burden.

As such, he opined that the protest was nothing more than an opposition demonstration under disguise of a protest against the GST.

“I am sure majority of those who attended the gathering are opposition supporters.

“When I see the pictures of the front liners in the gathering, I can see they seem well prepared for ‘battle’ with the authority.
