Sarawak BN leaders question PBS’ motive in spreading wings beyond its shores

SIBU: Sarawakians are in the good hand of state-based parties under the dynamic leadership of Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem, hence there is no need for outside party/s to provide ‘advice’.

State BN secretary-general Datuk Dr Stephen Rundi said yesterday Sarawakians are standing solidly behind Adenan’s leadership.

Dr Rundi was asked to comment on the media report of Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS), with the green light from the Registrar of Societies (ROS), spreading its wings to Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia.

PBS president Tan Sri Pairin Kitingan in his speech at the party’s delegates conference had requested that PBS’ application to expand to the peninsula and Sarawak be looked into.

“Whatever their (PBS) reasons are, this is a democratic country and they are free to decide as they deem fit, subject to ROS approval.

“But as far as Sarawak and Sarawakians are concerned – we are confident that we are in the good hand of Sarawak-based parties and we trust the leadership of our YAB Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan and will stand steadfastly behind him.

“And I don’t think we need any party/s outside Sarawak to tell us what is best for us and what to do for the better future for Sarawakians,” Dr Rundi, who is Assistant Minister of Public Utilities (Electricity and Telecommunications), told The Borneo Post.

The approval of PBS’s application to ROS was announced by Deputy Prime Minister cum Home Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi at its’ 30th annual delegates conference in Kota Kinabalu on Saturday.

PBB Supreme council member Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah pointed out that Malaysia is a democratic country and any registered political party can set up branches or contest in any part of Malaysia.

“However, parties that want to do that need to see the objective for their formation… whether it wants to remain as a regional state party or they want to be ambitious and be a national party.

“If PBS wants to spread their wings to Sarawak or Peninsula, they may but will Sarawakians or those in Semenanjung accept them?

“We are facing a more matured voters now and it is very very unlikely voters in Sarawak or Semenanjung will accept a candidate from Parti Bersatu Sabah!” Abdul Karim, who is Assistant Minister of Youth Development, added.

The Asajaya assemblyman added that the name of the party itself denotes it’s a Sabah party.

“Well, they can amend their constitution to “make” it a national party but whether voters in Semenanjung or Sarawak accept them has yet to be seen.

“Personally, I don’t see the need for them to jump into the fray in Sarawak or Semenanjung,” he opined.

Abdul Karim figured they (PBS) would only confuse the local voters unless they have charitable intention to lose their election deposits to EC as well as give some “work” to party canvassers during election.

Meanwhile, PRS deputy president and Selangau MP Datuk Joseph Entulu figured that the move might possibly help to strengthen BN Sabah and in Peninsular Malaysia because Kadazan Dusuns and other potential supporters from Sabah residing in Semenanjung will find it easier to be part of PBS.

“But no or little effect on Sarawak politics including on Sarawak BN,” Entulu, who is Minister in Prime Minister’s Department, said.
