SIBU: Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah wants all school students in his constituency to be proficient in English.
However, he does not plan to adopt any particular school in his constituency for the English proficiency programme, saying he treats all the schools as ‘equal’.
“I would want all school students in my constituency to be proficient in English and not just focussing on one ‘adopted school’.
“So far, most of the students in these schools understand English and it is just a matter of these schools improving their proficiency in English.
“How they do it is up to them as they are trained in teaching,” Abdul Karim, who is Asajaya assemblyman, told The Borneo Post yesterday.
Bandar Kuching MP and Kota Sentosa assemblyman Chong Chieng Jen had branded the state government’s move in asking all 82 elected representatives to adopt a school to improve the level of proficiency in the English language as “the most ridiculous of policies”.
Chong, also state Democratic Action Party (DAP) chairman, was quoted as saying that such suggestion would not work and that he viewed it as an admission of the failure on the part of the Barisan Nasional (BN) government to improve the level of English proficiency among students.
Political secretary to the chief minister Tan Kai said such move was not the same as asking elected representatives to teach English in schools. -TheBorneoPost
