Promoting Sibu via BASE Jump gets ministerial support

SIBU: The Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Ministry will support any plan to bring Sibu BASE Jump to a higher level to better promote this town, Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said, noting that the sport has gained momentum here.

He gave this assurance yesterday when asked if the Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Ministry was also promoting extreme sports like Sibu BASE Jump.

“Any form of sports comes within the purview of my ministry. I am glad to see that extreme sports like Sibu Base Jump seemed to be gaining a big interest.

“If Sibu has any plan to bring the Sibu Base Jump to higher level, definitely my ministry is
supportive, especially if it could generate tourism and promotion of Sibu,” the Asajaya assemblyman added.

Meanwhile, Sibu Resident Hii Chang Kee said Sibu BASE Jump was already on Sarawak Tourism Board’s (STB) calendar of events.

A total of 84 BASE jumpers are participating in the ninth edition of Sibu International BASE Jump from today until Sunday.

The trial jumps started yesterday.

The event is organised by the Sibu Division Tourism Task Group (DTTG). Eighty-six of the participants, including eight female jumpers, are foreigners and four are Malaysians.

The foreign participants are from Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Portugal, Russia, the UK and the US.

The jumpers would be brought to Rumah Michael Jalak in Bawan, Kanowit on Sept 24 for a retreat. -TheBorneoPost
