Chong pre-empting EC’s move, BN leaders charge

“YB Chong must have a short memory. After the last delineation, the seat of Kota Sentosa was created. Who is the winner in Kota Sentosa?" Tuan Haji Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah

SIBU: Two BN leaders yesterday blasted State DAP chairman Chong Chieng Jen for ‘pre-empting’ the Election Commission (EC) plan to create about nine new state seats during its delineation exercise this December.

State BN secretary-general Datuk Dr Stephen Rundi said Chong’s statement insinuated that the new seats were meant for the nine assemblymen who left SUPP and SPDP recently to form new parties.

Chong, also Bandar Kuching MP and Kota Sentosa assemblyman, was also quoted as saying there was no chance for the state to increase its constituencies without the consent of MPs from Pakatan Rakyat (PR).

Dr Rundi, also Assistant Minister of Public Utilities (Electricity and Telecommunications), said, “We will not interfere with the EC’s move to increase state seats, and there is no intention or arrangement to accommodate any group, whatsoever.

“Chong just pre-empt the EC’s decision. That is his view, and it will bear no weight on EC’s decision.”

PBB Supreme Council member Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah asked Chong to brush up his knowledge on delineation procedures.

Abdul Karim, also Assistant Minister of Youth Development, said there was nothing in the Federal Constitution stating that the EC must consult DAP or PR before increasing the number of parliamentary and state seats.

“Delineation is done by the Election Commission, an independent body, and it does not refer to any political parties for consent or views, whether from BN or Pakatan.

“YB Chong should not try to add a new requirement that the DAP must be consulted. Yes, I do agree that after the delineation it will be shown to the public for their response.”

He opined it was also unfair for Chong to accuse the EC of ‘proposing’ the new seats for the nine assemblymen who had left SUPP and SPDP.

It was also unfair for Chong to say the new constituencies were meant to increase BN seats, he added.

“The voters are the ones who determine the winners, not EC.

“YB Chong must have a short memory. After the last delineation, the seat of Kota Sentosa was created.

“Who is the winner in Kota Sentosa? So, it does not mean all seats created will guarantee a BN win.” -TheBorneoPost
