SIBU: National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) advanced loan payment (WPP) recipients are advised to spend the assistance given to them wisely.
Assistant Minister of Youth Development Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the government provided WPP in order to lighten the burden of parents and students, especially those from low and middle income group.
“We are aware that some parents are facing financial problems to send their children to universities or colleges due to high education fees,” he said at the presentation of WPP to 50 recipients from the central region.
The function was held at Kampung Nyabor Malay Union Club (MUC) hall in Kampung Bandong here yesterday.
Abdul Karim said university students from Sarawak who were studying in the peninsula shoulder a heavy financial burden as they also had to spend on air tickets, living and other expenses.
The gathering yesterday saw each WPP recipient receiving RM1,500 in warrant form. This forms part of their pre-approved PTPTN education loan.
For the May-June 2012 university intake session, PTPTN had distributed a total of RM49 million to 32,777 recipients nationwide.
Until December last year, a total of 553,913 WPP warrants, totalling RM812 million, had been cashed.
Nangka assemblyman Dr Annuar Rapa’ee and PTPTN accountant Ahmad Dasuki Abdul Majid were among those present at the function.
