KUCHING: With the tourism sector becoming a booming industry there is a need for graduates of tourism-related courses to master more languages so that they will be more efficient in serving tourists.

As an example, tour guides need to be able to speak Mandarin following the launching of the Kuching-Shenzhen route last December, Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said.

“This is not just limited to Mandarin, in fact, take up more languages to be multilingual and your demand would increase, and attract tourists from other countries to come visit Sarawak,” he said at the 14th convocation of SATT College yesterday.

He added that the state has much to offer, from the various tourism spots to the various ethnic groups and cultures.

In 2017, tourist arrival at the state was 4.86 million with total spending of RM8.9 billion and the target for this year is 5.25 million tourist arrivals, he said.

Thus, he urged the graduates to not let the opportunity slip by and start offering their own products and services to grab a slice of the market share.

With the digital era, he said graduates should keep up with the latest in digital technology as it expands the market for their products.

Best Student Award for overall diploma graduates went to Nur Hamsiah Noh, Best Student Award for certificate programme went to Nur Azmina Abdullah Adzhar, Best Student Award for students affairs unit went to Syazwan Humrawali and Best Industry Award (Certificate) went to Dayangku Batrisya Bazla Awangko Shahbuddin and Wilfred Jerome Mat.
