SIBU: All Barisan Nasional (BN) component parties in Sarawak will be shifting to top gear in their recruitment drive for registering eligible members as voters.
State BN secretary-general Datuk Dr Stephen Rundi told The Borneo Post yesterday that all the component parties had been briefed on the situation and their reports would be monitored.
He was asked if the state BN would ensure its component parties would go all out to register new voters, following a call by BN deputy chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin on Saturday for BN component parties to be more aggressive in getting people to register as voters and to set targets for themselves in every constituency.
Speaking to reporters after opening the triennial general assembly of the Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP) in Bintulu, Muhyiddin was quoted as saying this was a necessity as part of the preparation for the 11th Sarawak Election and the 14th General Election.
The state election is due in 2016 and the general election in 2018.
Muhyiddin, who is the deputy prime minister, was also reported to have said the process of registering new voters by the BN component parties had been unsatisfactory so far.
Dr Rundi, who is also Assistant Minister of Public Utilities (Electricity and Telecommunications), said: “As a matter of fact, we (BN) had briefed all the component parties of the situation and all parties are expected to instruct their machinery all the way to grassroots level to move aggressively in their membership drive and to ensure all eligible members be registered as voters.
“BN secretary-general’s office will monitor the reports from all parties and I would like to remind all parties
concerned to be mindful of their members’ status; that they must not be a member of any component parties.”
PBB supreme council member Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said PBB has never stopped registering more members for the party as well as assist in registering eligible voters.
Abdul Karim, who is assistant minister of youth development and Asajaya assemblyman, added that the party was doing this as a national service to get eligible citizens to register and do their national duty of voting when there is an election.
“By approaching and assisting in registering these new voters, it is hoped that they would remember us PBB and BN when they cast their votes,” he said. -TheBorneoPost
