SIBU: The willingness of Sarawak Workers Party (SWP) to work with DAP revealed SWP’s true colour, PRS deputy president Datuk Joseph Entulu said.

He said it would not affect BN’s chance of winning in the next state election.

To him, SWP’s assistance to the Peninsula-based DAP is of little significance since DAP’s strength would remain in the urban only.

“If it is rural areas, SWP had been proven to be not accepted in these places. They may claim they have some strength based on the number of votes they got.

“But in actual fact, those are always the votes of the opposition. Secondly, in areas where they had no personal interest, they led their candidates struggled on their own, even losing deposits in the recent parliamentary election.

“Such was the case in Kanowit and Sri Aman. This means that they have no support anywhere,” he told The Borneo Post.

In May 5 polls, SWP contested in all PRS’s six seats, namely Sri Aman, Lubok Antu, Julau, Kanowit, Hulu Rajang and Selangau but lost all with two of its (SWP) candidates – Wilfred Landong (Sri Aman) and Ellison Ludan (Kanowit) losing their deposits.

Let flying of flags be done voluntarily — Abdul Karim

SIBU: Love and patriotism for the country should come from the heart and not under the compulsion of the law, Assistant Minister of Youth Development Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said.

He said all premises should fly the Jalur Gemilang, but this should not be made so by the law.

The Communications and Multimedia Ministry would study the need to introduce a law to make it compulsory for every premises to fly the Jalur Gemilang throughout Merdeka month.

Its Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek had said such a law was necessary because many premises and buildings, especially those owned by private organisations, did not understand the need or importance of flying the Jalur Gemilang to show their love for the nation.

In response, Abdul Karim said the reflection of loyalty must come from the heart and not done because the law required it.

“Not necessary for that law please. Teach the citizens to love and be proud of the country,” added the Asajaya assemblyman.

A councillor of Maradong District Council, Felician Teo, said Ahmad Shabery’s heart was in the right place by advocating the flying of the national flag to be made compulsory.

Karim nafi akan lawan Fadilah

KUCHING: Ahli Majlis Tertinggi (AMT) Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah menafi khabar angin mengatakan beliau akan bertanding untuk jawatan ketua pemuda pada konvensyen parti nanti.

Abdul Karim yang juga Ahli Dewan Undangan Negeri (ADUN) Asajaya berkata, beliau telah melalui era Pemuda dan tidak berminat untuk bertanding bagi merebut jawatan tersebut.

“Jika terdapat khabar angin seperti itu kedengaran, ia cuma sembang kosong sahaja,” ujar Abdul Karim ketika ditemui selepas merasmikan Mesyuarat Perwakilan Cawangan PBB Batu Kawa di sebuah hotel kelmarin.

Menurutnya, Pemuda kini mempunyai ketua yang berkebolehan iaitu Datuk Fadillah Yusof dan beliau yakin Pemuda akan dijaga dengan baik olehnya.

“Saya tidak pasti sama ada Fadillah akan mempertahankan jawatannya, namun jika beliau berbuat demikian saya yakin beliau akan mampu berkhidmat dengan baik untuk bahagian Pemuda parti,” jelas Abdul Karim.

Sementara itu, beliau turut memberitahu bahawa sesi pemilihan cawangan serta ranting parti di seluruh negeri berjalan dengan lancar walaupun sesetengah daripadanya mengalami perubahan dari segi pucuk pimpinan.

“Ia merupakan perkara biasa dalam amalan demokrasi di mana kita akan melihat beberapa perubahan baharu dalam sesi pemilihan perwakilan cawangan dan ranting.

Auto and biker clubs a healthy passion for youths — Karim

KUCHING: Automobile and motorcycle enthusiasts in Sarawak are encouraged to form clubs which can act as a platform to promote goodwill, said Assistant Minister of Youth Development (Urban) Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah yesterday.

He explained that with the right mix of activities, such clubs can eradicate social ills among youths while at the same time letting others in on their hobby.

“Automobile and motorcycle clubs can play their role in improving harmony within society. Therefore, I hope those who have passion and great interest for such hobby form clubs because these clubs can attract youths and together you can organise healthy activities,” he said, prior to flagging off the ‘Merdeka Convoy’ at Le’Park yesterday.

The convoy was the climax of the two-day Merdeka Auto Carnival (MAC) organised by Sarawak Auto Enthusiasts Society (SAS) which saw close to 300 cars of various models ranging from Masserati, Ferarri, Lambhorgini, Mitsubishi, Mazda, Honda and K-cars displayed at Le’Park.

More than 200 cars participated in the ‘Merdeka Convoy’ led by the Kuching Supercar Club as they circled the city and back to Le’Park covering an estimated 53km to instill patriotism in conjunction with the 50th Malaysia Day celebrations.

Other exciting events during the carnival which ended yesterday included a street party, mountain biking competition and an array of other activities.
