‘Itut’ vandals despicable, without right frame of mind — Abdul Karim

SIBU: The wilful damage to the wooden structure meant for the ‘Itut’ (swing) at Sibu Town Square has irked Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

He urged the Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) – the organiser of Borneo Cultural Festival (BCF) – to take stern action against the culprits, whom he labelled as ‘without the right frame of mind’.

“Despicable. Whoever vandalised this structure must be sick in their mind. They must have evil intention in wanting to see an accident happen when the structure is put up for the public to use.

“The clean cut to the structure looks like it was done using a saw.

"I hope SMC will beef up safety and security to ensure the public will be safe during the festival,” he said yesterday.

Besides the ‘Itut’, the BCF Arch and a grand procession parade are among the distinctive attractions for BCF 2017.

Following the discovery of the damaged ‘Itut’, SMC deputy chairwoman Rogayah Jamain lodged a police report.

At the same time, Persatuan Kebajikan Melanau Kampung Nangka Sibu’ (PKMKNS) secretary Mondari Manjat said he was saddened that the incident happened just days before they were supposed to erect the structure.

The association had initially planned to erect the ‘Itut’ today (July 18).

This year’s BCF is on July 20-29, with Abdul Karim as the guest-of-honour at the opening ceremony on July 20. -TheBorneoPost
