ASAJAYA: The national anthem and the national flag ‘Jalur Gemilang’ must be respected every time it is played or raised in public places.

This is because they reflect our national identity and sovereignty, Assistant Minister of Youth Development Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said.

In fact, he added, everyone must stand still when the national anthem ‘Negara Ku’ is played and sing it together with full dedication and spirit of patriotism.

Likewise, he said further, when the Jalur Gemilang is raised everybody must respect it. He also reminded that the national flag must not be placed anywhere and should never be stepped on.

The Asajaya assemblyman said this in his speech before the launching of Samarahan/Asajaya district-level ‘Jalur Gemilang Roadshow’ themed ‘Explorasi Malaysia Sehati Sejiwa’ at Kampung Sebandi Ulu, here yesterday.

On the roadshow organised by state Information Department, Abdul Karim said it is to instil the spirit of patriotism among all Sarawakians.

“In Asajaya, the spirit of patriotism is very good and every year I felt it in every village here and I hope all our community leaders encourage their villagers to raise the national flag until September 16 – Malaysia Day.”

Talking about Kampung Sebandi Ulu, he said he was very proud as the village was adjudged the most ‘Cheerful and Patriotic Village’ in the whole country.

He advised the villagers to continue showing their high spirit of patriotism and raise the national flag in every corner of the village.

“By doing this we are showing that we respect the flag, the government, the nation and the sovereignty of the country,” he pointed out.

Turning to the youths, he told them to pick up the spirit of patriotism without the urging of elders.

At the same time, he urged everyone to work harder and assured them that the government would strive to uplift their standard of living through development projects.

“Malaysia is an independent country and we must not be poor and we must continue to improve our standard of living and be on par with the rest of the world,” he said.

The information officer for Kuching/Samarahan Division Aziz Abdul Rahman, who is also the chief of the roadshow convoy, handed the Jalur Gemilang to Abdul Karim to symbolically launch the programme, witnessed by Asajaya district officer Habari Bakar, Temenggong Chek Bujang and Kampung Sebandi Ulu headman Jama Baylai.

Later, Abdul Karim presented letters of appreciation and gifts to the elderly villagers of Kampung Sebandi Ulu for the contributions.

Among other events during the launching were singing of patriotic songs by the choir from Kampung Sebandi Ulu, recital of Independence Day Poem and martial arts demonstration by local teenagers.
